Description

Blanchard's Farmhouse has origins dating back to the 15th century and has been altered in the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries, with recent restoration work. It features an important interior.

The entrance elevation is constructed of rubble and has a modern tiled roof. The building is two storeys high and has two windows with glazing bar sashes, one of which is a 16-pane design, set in plain stone surrounds. There is a short projecting south wing with modern casements and a one-storey projecting porch located in the re-entrant angle.

The rear elevation is rendered and includes a projecting modern north wing to the east (left). The main block to the right is also two storeys tall and has three windows: one glazing bar sash, one four-light oak mullion casement, and one modern casement, along with a central plank door.

Inside, the layout was formerly a cross passage with a room on either side. To the left (east) of the rear door is an 18th-century room featuring panelled doors, a dado, and cupboards on either side of a modern fireplace, along with cornices. To the right (west) of the rear door, there is a turned baluster ventilation panel at the top of the internal wall, a large low wooden lintel, and stop-chamfered beams.

The easternmost room contains a winder stair leading up to the attic, which has a panelled door at the bottom and an adjoining cupboard. There are considerable remains of a medieval roof, including two collar trusses supported on wooden blocks in the walls, with cusped arch braces. The roof space consists of five bays with windbracing, although it is now subdivided.
