Description
The Swan is a 17th-century inn, with later alterations and additions. It is constructed of rubble and brick, with a pantiled roof and a gable stack to the south wing. The building follows a T-plan, comprising three blocks of different heights and including a cross wing to the south. It is two storeys high and has a 1:1:1 window arrangement on the front elevation. The left block features two three-light casements at the first floor, with leaded lights and a timber lintel, and a three-light casement at ground floor with a brick relieving arch. A gabled porch originally open, now has a round-headed window to the front and a 20th-century door to the left. The centre block has a four-light and a two-light casement at the first floor, with leaded lights, a three-light casement under the eaves, and plank shutters to the windows flanking the porch. The right block has an 18-pane sash window at ground and first floor facing north, a similar window on the first floor facing the front, and a panelled door. The north elevation includes steps leading to a door at loft level. The south elevation contains a 19th-century sash window, two blocked windows at the first floor, and a blocked attic window to the east of the wing. The rear of the building has 19th and 20th-century extensions, both single-storey. Internally, there is a 20th-century winder staircase, a door with a chamfered Tudor arched head at the first floor, plank and batten doors, and in the south room on the first floor, chamfered and scroll-stopped beams.
