Description

The Crown is a coaching inn located on the north side of High Street in Marshfield. It dates from the 17th century and has been altered in the 18th and 19th centuries. The building is constructed of ashlar and features a double Roman tiled roof. It stands two storeys high with cellars and consists of five bays. The left end has a rusticated pilaster, while the second and fourth bays are adorned with two-storey canted bay windows, each topped with coped gables and saddle stones. The windows on the ground floor are large pane sash windows from the mid-19th century, and there is a central carriage entry with a segmental head. A continuous string course runs above the ground floor.

To the west, there is a rear wing that is also two storeys tall and has two bays. It features glazing bar sash windows on the ground floor, including a triple window on the left, and casement windows with ovolo moulded mullions and surrounds on the first floor, with nesting boxes in between. The central door has a moulded surround. The east rear wing is two storeys high with four bays, showcasing a mix of modern windows, including two-light casement windows with moulded mullions and surrounds, as well as a paired glazing bar sash window.

The rear wing that encloses the courtyard is built of rubble and has a corrugated iron roof, which was formerly used as stables and a barn. Inside the rear west wing, there is a large hollow/ogee moulded fire surround with a square head, and the stop-chamfered beams include one with an edge roll moulding.
