Description
Downthorn's Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the early 18th century, with extensions from the 19th century and alterations made in the 20th century. It is built of coursed limestone rubble and features a slate mansard roof over the main range, which has stone coped gable ends and ashlar stacks with cornices. The left wing has a lower asbestos mansard roof, while the left end extension has a stone tile roof with stone gable end stacks.
The building has a two-room plan for the main range, with central winder stairs and both rooms heated by gable end stacks. There is a one-room plan service wing on the left and a 19th-century one-room plan extension at the left end of the service wing, which includes an outshut at the back.
The farmhouse is two storeys high, with an attic and cellar. The main range has an asymmetrical three-window south front, featuring 20th-century two-light casements with hoodmoulds on the ground floor. The doorway to the right of centre has been converted into a window, and there is a large 20th-century porch to the left of centre. The left service wing is one storey and attic with a single window, while the left end extension is two storeys high with one window and 20th-century two-light casement windows.
On the rear of the main range, there are three two-light stone mullion windows on the first floor, two of which are ovolo-moulded, and the one on the right is cyma-moulded. There is a small single-light ovolo-moulded stone window on the ground floor to the right of centre, a blocked doorway to its right, and a casement window to the left with a hoodmould. The right side features 20th-century and 19th-century outshuts against the service wing.
Inside, the left room has a chamfered stone fireplace, and the winder staircase is boxed in at the centre of the house. The first floor includes a fielded four-panel door and plank doors. There is a stone barrel-vaulted cellar beneath the left room, and the roof structure consists of lapped collars, clasped purlins, and large common rafters.
