Description
The Portcullis Hotel is a 17th-century building located on Horse Street in Sodbury. It is constructed of rubble and features a slate roof with moulded coped verges. The hotel has two storeys and a gabled attic. On the first floor, there is one window with glazing bar sashes set in a plain painted stone surround. The second floor has two 2-light casements with ovolo-moulded mullions, which are positioned under dripmoulds with returned stops. An oval window is set in a rectangular panel at the apex of the gable, which is topped with a ball finial.
To the left, there is a later two-storey extension that includes a coach entrance with a stone surround. This wing, rebuilt in the early to mid-18th century, is made of coursed rubble with alternating Pennant sandstone and limestone, and has a steeply pitched double Roman tiled roof. It also has two storeys and an attic with dormers, featuring two windows with 3-light casements and stone mullions, along with dripmoulds that have return stops.
