Description

The Mount is a house located on Hicks Common Road in Winterbourne, dating from the mid 17th century, with extensions from the mid 18th century and further alterations and refacing in the early 19th century. The building is constructed of rendered rubble with freestone dressings and has slate roofs.

The principal elevation faces south and features two storeys with seven windows, all of which are 8 and 10 pane glazing bar sashes. The outer three windows are set in pitched roof canted bays, which have architraves, a blocking course, and a cornice that runs along the entire front below the parapet. The central entrance is glazed and is sheltered by a flat hood supported by pilasters. Above the entrance is a tri-partite window, and the roof is steeply pitched. The rear of the building retains a gabled appearance with a stair turret in the re-entrant angle.

The east elevation, which now serves as the entrance, is also two storeys and has four windows, along with two additional windows in a single-storey rear wing. Two of the first-floor windows are blank, while the other two are glazing bar sashes. Below these is a glazed entrance that is sheltered by a plain Tuscan portico. The rear wing features one window with gothick tracery and one pair of 8-pane glazing bar sashes.

Inside, the entrance hall includes a stopped, chamfered beam, and the open well stair has turned balusters and a moulded handrail.
