Description

The Church of St Mary the Virgin is a pre-fabricated missionary church made of corrugated iron, which was brought in from elsewhere and re-erected at this location in 1914.

The building is set on a brick base and features a timber frame clad in painted matt black corrugated galvanised iron. It has a pitched roof covered with tiles, which includes decorative terracotta finials at the gable ends and intricately carved timber barge boards beneath the eaves. The church has a rectangular plan with a small projecting entrance porch on the east side, which contains a vestry cupboard accessible from inside the church.

On the exterior, the south-east elevation features a blind porch that projects fully. Inside the porch, which is timber clad, there is a four-panelled door leading into the church. The north-east gable end has a three-light timber casement window with two horizontal top swing windows above and a rectangular fixed light at the apex. The south-west gable end has a similar window arrangement, but the windows here are later timber replacements. Above the fixed light, there is a small bell-cote. The north-west side elevation also has two of the same three-light windows with top swing lights above, though these have been partially replaced as well.

Inside, the church has a fully timber clad interior that remains remarkably well-preserved. Most of its fixtures and fittings are still in place, including timber panelled doors, the small vestry, timber pews in the nave, a Bible lectern, and a cast iron oil wall lamp in the sanctuary at the north-east end. Additionally, there are 1930s electric wall heaters and Bakelite light switches.
