Description

The Wesleyan Methodist Chapel, built in 1843, is located on Blackhorse Road. It was constructed near the original chapels and schools established by John Wesley. The chapel features rendered walling and an ashlar plinth, topped with a low-pitched modern tile roof and end gables. Each long side of the building has four windows on two levels; the upper windows are tall with semi-circular heads, small panes, some colored glass, and moulded surrounds. There is a moulded impost band and a plain cill band. The lower windows have plain square-headed openings. The façade includes wide angle pilasters and a moulded eaves cornice, which breaks forward with round pilasters capped with modillions.

The entrance elevation on the north side has an open pediment with a tablet inscribed "Wesleyan Chapel 1843" in the tympanum. It features three tall semi-circular headed windows closely set together on the upper level, and a central solid porch at ground level with a semi-circular headed entrance door. There are similar openings on either side of the porch, each with double wooden doors beneath painted arched fanlights, and moulded heads with an impost band that continues around the porch. A transverse wing of lower height is located at the south end. The chapel is said to contain its original galleried interior and fittings from 1843.
