Description
The Downend Boy Scouts' War Memorial is a war memorial unveiled in November 1921, built and possibly designed by Mr. J Dawson, commemorating the boy scouts from the 1st Downend Troop who died in the First World War. The monument is made of rock-hewn stone and features a bronze plaque with inset bronze lettering.
The memorial takes the form of an obelisk that rises from a two-step plinth, which sits on a square platform. At the top of the obelisk is a stone cross. There is a deep, projecting string course located roughly halfway up the obelisk, with a cyma moulding on the underside and a curved upper surface. On the south-west face, above the string course, is a circular plaque displaying the Fleur-de-lis of the Boy Scouts movement. Below the string course is an inscription that reads ‘1st DOWNEND TROOP / BOY SCOUTS. / TO THE MEMORY OF THOSE WHO FELL / IN THE GREAT WAR / 1914-1919 / (Names)’. Inscribed on the upper step of the plinth is the phrase ‘CALLED TO HIGHER SERVICE’. The other sides of the monument are plain, except for the continuous string course.
