Description
The Kent Seat is located in the rear garden of 24 Cleeve Lawns, Downend, Mangotsfield, South Gloucestershire. This wooden alcove or garden seat dates from around 1750 and is attributed to Thomas Wright of Durham. It is constructed from timber, painted, and sits on a cement-rendered base with Pennant stone paving and a zinc roof covering. The structure is semi-octagonal and faces west, featuring a pedimented façade with latticed decoration and an ogee arched opening that rises from imposts. The interior retains a dentil cornice, panelled walls, and a seat.
Historically, this structure is associated with Thomas Wright's work for the owner of Cleve Hill House, which has since been demolished. A garden plan for the estate, created in the 1750s for owner Charles Bragge, is now held in the Victoria & Albert Museum. The design of such structures is named after William Kent, the architect who originated this alcove type at Rousham Park, Oxfordshire, in the late 1730s. The Kent Seat is listed as a rare survival of this delicate type of garden structure.
