Description

This pair of lime kilns, likely built in the early to mid-19th century, is located approximately 260 meters northeast of the Church of St John on Church Hill Road in Plymouth. Constructed from Plymouth limestone and slatestone rubble, the kilns are positioned back-to-back and built into the bank at the rear. Each kiln features a round-arched opening made of limestone, known as a swallow, which leads to a corbelled vault. The front wall of the kilns is bowed. These lime kilns are situated at the entrance to the Hooe Lake limestone quarry.
