Description
The orangery at Saltram House is a Grade II* listed structure located in Plympton, designed in 1773 by Stockman, based on a proposal by landscape designer Richmond. It serves as an orangery for a large country house. The building was damaged by fire in 1932 but has since been restored. It features a wooden structure set on a granite ashlar plinth, topped with a dry slate hipped roof that has a central pediment, all adorned with modillion cornices. The orangery has a rectangular plan and is a single storey with a symmetrical front that has a 2:3:2 bay arrangement. The central bays project forward and are topped with a triangular pediment. Doric columns are present in the central bays, while panelled pilasters flank them. Each bay contains a large hornless sash window with glazing bars above a glazed apron, all topped by a Doric entablature with triglyphs. The interior has not been inspected.
