Description
The amphitheatre in the grounds of Saltram House is a Grade II* listed structure dating from the late 18th century. It features a screen wall made of rusticated granite ashlar, which has three bays of round arches. Each arch's keystone is adorned with a carved face. Above the arches is a parapet with rusticated piers and a moulded cornice. The structure is currently roofless. Behind the screen wall, there are remnants of three former grottos built into the hillside. In front of the wall, there are seven granite steps. The amphitheatre is positioned in a prominent location overlooking the River Plym.
