Description
The chapel at Saltram House, located on Merafield Road in Plympton, is a building that was originally a barn, later converted to a chapel. It is possibly of late medieval origin and was converted in 1743, as noted on a rainwater head. This conversion is attributed to Stockman, who also designed the Orangery and possibly the garden house. The structure is built of local rubble, mostly rendered, and features a dry slate hipped roof behind an embattled parapet. It is designed in the Gothic style with a rectangular plan and is a single storey. The front is symmetrical with five bays and has buttresses, with pointed-arched openings. The Gothic-style windows include Y tracery, and there is a central doorway with panelled doors and a fanlight above. Similar windows can be found at the rear. The interior has not been inspected but is described as very simple.
