Description

Plympton St Maurice House and the former St Maurice Cottage are a house and attached service cottage dating from the 18th century. The building is finished in stucco with some stucco detailing and features a steep dry slate hipped roof behind a parapet with a plain entablature. The structure has an irregular arrangement of brick stacks and a double-depth plan that likely includes three rooms at the entrance front, with an entrance hall located to the right of the center.

The exterior consists of two storeys above a basement, with a 1:2:1-bay entrance front that has projecting central bays. The windows are probably early 19th century hornless sashes with thin glazing bars, including a sash to the left of the doorway. The doorway is set within recessed round-arched architraves and features a traceried fanlight above a six-panel door with fielded panels. The south garden front rises to three storeys and includes two bowed bays. The service cottage on the right is a one-window range with windows that have glazing bars and a wide doorway on the right topped with a moulded hood over a four-panel door.

The interior has not been inspected recently, but a previous description notes an original staircase with turned balusters, slender newels, and a plain dado with flat pilasters. There are plain marble fireplaces, and one ceiling features an egg-and-dart cornice. The former St Maurice Cottage was listed separately on May 1, 1975.
