Description
This street lamp, located at the north corner of the Clarence Steps in the Royal William Victualling Yard, dates from around 1835. It is made of cast iron and features a tall, tapering base with rounded moulding, a shaft designed like fasces, a crossbar through a round wreath, and a mid-20th century lamp with a finial.
Historically, this lamp is one of three matching lamps that may be original to the yard, where the designer John Rennie preferred the use of gas lighting. The lamp is part of the most complete victualling yard in the country and represents a unique example of Neo-Classical planning for a state manufacturing site. It has group value with the Clarence Steps.
