Description

No. 32 Underwood Road is a small house from the 17th century, located in Plympton. The building has rubble walls that include some dressed stone fragments from the 17th century, with some render being removed during the survey. The rear of the house features limewashed rubble. It has a steep corrugated asbestos roof and a rubble stack on the left side, which has a brick upper section.

The house has an irregular plan with two rooms at the front and a former passage between them. Behind the hall and kitchen on the left is a dairy, and there is a central rear stair turret with a winder stair leading to the back of the passage. There is also evidence of a former winder stair in a segmental recess that now has a window on the front left side.

The exterior is two storeys high with a two-window range. The ground floor has 20th-century horned sash windows, while the first floor has late 20th-century windows. There is a 20th-century door approximately in the center of the façade. The rear of the house retains old wall surfaces, adding to its character.

Inside, the house retains many interesting features, including an old first-floor structure with a resited 17th-century chamfered axial beam and wide elm floorboards. There is a 17th-century splayed kitchen fireplace with chamfered granite jambs and a chamfered oak lintel. A stone-nogged partition is located at the rear of the kitchen, and there is an 18th-century winder stair in a semicircular well. The roof structure has not been inspected but may also be of interest. Overall, some early features enhance the appeal of this small house.
