Numbers 39 To 48 And Forecourt Railings To Number 39 And Numbers 43 To 47

Numbers 39 to 48 Emma Place, Stonehouse, is an early 19th-century terrace of houses planned as a group. The buildings are stucco faced, with dry slate or asbestos slate roofs hidden behind a stuccoed parapet featuring a moulded entablature. There are hipped roof dormers, and brick or rendered end stacks, along with stacks over the pediments of the two end houses. The design follows a double-depth plan, with most houses having a front room on the left and an entrance hall on the right. The two larger end houses have their entrance halls located behind the front rooms.

The houses are two storeys high with attics over basements, and each has a three-window front with giant pilasters marking divisions between properties. The end houses are distinguished by triangular pediments, incorporating central attic windows facing the street. Many original hornless sash windows remain, some with glazing bars, and ground-floor windows are round-arched. The porches are enclosed with moulded entablatures, and many have blind side windows and panelled doors.

The interiors were not inspected, but are likely to be of interest. The property features low plinths above the basement walls, along with original iron railings to numbers 39 and 43 to 47. The terrace forms part of a significant group of early 19th-century housing in Plymouth.
