Description

Numbers 42, 44, and 46 are a group of three terraced houses, likely dating from the very early 19th century. They are located on Durnford Street, Stonehouse, Plymouth. The external walls are rendered, replacing original stucco on probable rubble stonework, and have a dry slate roof with a dentilled eaves cornice. There are three hipped dormers and large brick end stacks.

The houses feature a double-depth plan, with Nos 44 and 46 arranged as a pair, mirrored around a central paired entrance hall. Number 42 has an entrance hall on the right. Each house is two storeys high with an attic over a basement, and each has a three-window front. The first floor windows retain their original hornless sashes with glazing bars; the ground floor windows are later, with two panes per sash and horns. The doorways are pedimented and pilastered, with fluted pilasters and blind fanlights behind the open pediments and panelled reveals for the doors.

The interior remains uninspected but is likely to contain features of interest. Low plinths to the basement walls support wrought-iron railings with arrowhead finials. The houses are part of a planned late Georgian street layout dating from 1773.
