Description

South Common Farmhouse is a farmhouse, largely dating from the early 19th century, although it may incorporate an earlier building. The exterior is rendered rubble with a plain tiled roof, brick ridge and gable stacks. The building is in an L-shape, with a wing to the front left and a ridge stack likely marking a former gable end. The main two-storey, three-window front features 16-pane sash windows, a central 20th-century double door within a segmental-headed opening, and a lower, two-storey wing to the left with a 16-pane sash window on the ground floor (facing inwards) and a three-light casement in the gable end, accompanied by an external stack. A more recent plate-glass window is present on the first floor of the main range. The rear elevation has two 16-pane sashes and a plate-glass window at first floor, while the ground floor features two plate-glass windows and a studded door with a fanlight containing splayed glazing bars. A single-storey, flat-roofed addition from the 20th century is located to the left, featuring plate-glass windows, and there is an attached single-storey outhouse with a door and multi-pane casement. The interior was not inspected. The group value context is that the building contributes distinctively to the character of the area.
