Description
This is a pair of chest tombs located 5 yards to the north-east of the chancel of the Church of St James in Winscombe. The first tomb dates from the early 16th century and is a coarsely carved box without embellishment, featuring plain incised letters that read "Matthew Waller/Vicar/1516." The second tomb is from the late 18th century and has inscribed panels, which are now illegible, along with pilasters and a frieze that includes a memento mori. It also has a plain ashlar slab. This pair of tombs is prominent and noteworthy, with the earliest known chest tomb in the area being that of Matthew Waller.
