Description
St Edith’s Orphanage is a large, late Victorian Gothic mansion situated on a prominent site overlooking Clevedon Bay. Built in the late 1800s, the building is characterised by grey rubble walls with freestone dressings, and a modern pantile roof. It stands four storeys high and features tall stone stacks topped with crenellations. The asymmetrical front has gabled wings projecting to the left and right. A small gable and polygonal turret with a crenellated parapet rise above the roofline at the centre of the building. Gables are accentuated with cornices, parapets, and finials, while stringcourses run along the façade. A small wheel window is positioned towards the top of the turret. The building has four windows across the front. Canted bays extend from the lower storeys of the gabled wings. Gothic pointed windows, in various styles, are grouped in two, three, and four-light arrangements. Most windows include cusping, eared spandrels, hoodmoulds, and sashes with plate glass. The main entrance is located beneath the polygonal turret, accessed by a double flight of steps with a balustraded parapet. The doorway is framed by a large pointed arch featuring nailhead detail in the mouldings, with shields within the spandrels, a dripmould, and corner shafts topped with foliage capitals.
