Description

The United Reformed Church, located on Hill Road, was built in 1855 by Foster & Wood of Bristol. It is constructed from rubble with freestone dressings, and has plain clay tiles with coloured bands over the chancel, ornate clay ridge tiles, and raised coped verges. The building is composed of a nave (configured with the ecclesiastical west end to the front), an east porch, a chancel, a south transept with a bell-turret, a south porch, and a north aisle built into the hillside. The church exhibits a Picturesque style inspired by the Decorated period. The west end of the nave features a three-light window with a continuous drip mould above a single-storey gabled porch, flanked by rooms beneath a trefoil-pierced parapet, with lancet windows elsewhere. The large gabled south transept contains a three-light window with geometrical tracery. To the left of the window is a slender octagonal bell-tower, topped by a shafted lantern with a steep conical roof. To the right is a similar gabled porch that steps forward. The north aisle is a plain gabled structure built into the hillside. The church forms an important element within a notable group of buildings. The interior was not inspected during the listing process.
