Description

April Cottage is a house that likely dates from the early to mid-16th century, with later alterations. It features colourwashed render over stone rubble and has a gabled pantile roof, with brick stacks at the ridge and right end. The building has a three-room plan, probably with a through passage to the left of the central heated hall. It stands two storeys tall and has a three-window range. A late 20th-century central lean-to porch has been added. The windows are late 19th-century horned 4/4-pane sashes, including a half-dormer on the right and a two-light casement on the left. To the right, there is a late 18th or 19th-century bay that is one storey and attic high, featuring 20th-century windows, including a gabled dormer. There is a continuous outshut at the rear of this addition, which adjoins a 19th-century outshut at the back of the main range.

Inside, the ground-floor beams are steeply chamfered and date from the 16th century. There is a remodelled open fireplace on the right, and the central room has a stack inserted in a narrow bay to the left, featuring a fine late 15th-century reset bressummer with cusped trefoil carving above the fireplace, which has an early 19th-century brick flue. The service bay to the left has been truncated. The roof space is not accessible, but there is a truss to the right of the hall that has casing over a possible jointed cruck.
