Description

The Cottage is a former stable block, now a house, dating to the late 17th century, with later 19th-century alterations and an addition. It is constructed of random coursed rubble with dressed stone openings, with some rendering to the dormers and a pantile roof. The original structure is a 4-bay, 2-storey range from the 17th century, with a 1-bay addition from the late 19th century on the right-hand side. Windows are late 17th-century hollow-mould cross-mullions, which develop through the eaves line into late 19th-century segmental-headed dormers of similar detail. Irregularly sized quoins mark the boundaries of the original, single-storey 17th-century range. The 19th-century addition features a corbelled chimney stack, a dormer, and a segmental-headed doorway with a partially glazed door. The south gable end has 19th-century windows and an attic 17th-century keyed oculus. Modernized extensions have been added to the rear. Historically, the stables belonged to Churchill Court and were reportedly used as a barracks by John Churchill, later 1st Duke of Marlborough.
