Description
Churchill Court is a detached house that likely has a core dating back to the 16th century, with additions from the 17th century and significant restoration and rebuilding completed in 1877. The building is constructed from coursed rubble with ashlar dressings and stone copings, featuring a double Roman tile roof on the main range, some pantiles on the rear range, and plain tiles on the staircase tower roof. It has an L-shaped plan with a staircase tower located in the northeast external angle.
The house is two storeys high, with upper windows set in the gables. The windows on the east front are 19th-century two and three-light cross-mullions, while the north and south facades of the rear wing contain some 17th-century cross-mullions. The three-storey staircase tower, originally two storeys, has similar chamfered cross-mullions and small leaded panes. The main block and tower feature offset corner buttresses.
There is a gabled porch on the east front with a Perpendicular style entrance arch, and an additional doorway in the rear range is topped with a shell hood on carved brackets. The building has stone stacks, some of which develop from gabled extrusions, and a weathervane atop the tower roof.
Inside, the kitchen in the rear range has chamfered beams and raised and fielded panelling, along with a newel stair featuring oak treads in the tower. The remainder of the interior is late 19th-century, showcasing a fine staircase with cusped cast iron balusters and stained glass in the west window of the stair.
