Description
Yeomans Cott is a house that likely dates from the 16th century or early 17th century, with 19th-century alterations including changes to the windows. The building is rendered and whitewashed over a rubble core, topped with a straw-thatch roof that has half-hips at each end and features a brick chimney stack at the rear.
The house has a single room depth and follows a three-unit plan with a through-passage. The central hall contains a lateral rear fireplace, while the heated inner room to the far right has a blocked fireplace. The lower room to the left has been incorporated into the through-passage, and the rear door opening of this passage has been blocked. A staircase was added in the 19th century at the rear. During this time, the doorway to the inner room from the hall was also blocked, although the original semi-circular headed opening remains, with a new doorway created.
The exterior of the house is two storeys high and features four small two-light casement windows on the first floor, with the left three having small panes. There are two door openings with 20th-century doors; the left door is ribbed, while the right is half-glazed and leads to a non-conforming glazed conservatory.
Inside, the hall has a fireplace with a high wooden bressumer that has run-out stops, rubble jambs, and an axial ceiling beam with scroll stops. There is a wooden window seat at the front window. The lower room to the left is unheated and lacks features, while the inner room to the right contains a kitchen with a blocked fireplace and is also featureless. On the first floor, the straight principals of the four-bay roof are visible, with lapped and pegged collars.
