Description

The King's Arms Hotel, located on High East Street, is a late 18th century or early 19th century building. It features a three-window stucco front, standing three storeys tall with attics and a tiled roof that includes hipped dormers. The facade is adorned with a moulded wood cornice and a fluted frieze. At the near west end, there is a slight setback that leads to a segmental arched opening to a courtyard, with a window above that has a cast iron balcony. Additionally, there is a splayed bay on the first floor near the west end.

A prominent feature of the hotel is the projecting porch, which is supported by Roman Doric columns and an entablature. The porch is complemented by an elaborate cast iron balustrade and a lamp bracket. Above the porch, there is a fine two-storey semi-circular bow, with windows consisting of five lights separated by fluted pilasters. An entablature with triglyphs is positioned above the centre line of the pilasters, and the main cornice of the facade wraps around the bow above the second floor.

The stables and outbuildings associated with the King's Arms Hotel, including the former King's Arms Tap, date from the late 18th century or early 19th century as well. They are constructed of chequer brick and have a hipped old tile roof, featuring various modern windows and three Diocletian windows. The Municipal Buildings and Nos. 28 to 33 form a group with the hotel.
