Description

23 High East Street is a late 19th-century building, likely designed by Crickmay and Son of Weymouth, who also designed Agriculture House on High West Street. The building is constructed of brown brick with ashlar dressings, which appear to be Bath stone. It stands three storeys tall and features continuous sill bands, a stringcourse, and a full entablature adorned with cartouches linked by swags beneath the frieze. The modillion eaves cornice and parapet add to its architectural detail.

The brick chimneys are embellished with ashlar ornamentation, including dentilled stringcourses, ornamental panels, coved cornices, and acroteria. The façade has three ranges of sash windows with moulded architraves. The first-floor windows are particularly ornate, featuring scroll-ended friezes with swags on oblong panels, dentilled cornices, and scroll-shaped pediments topped with terminal acroteria and shell motifs in the centers. The ends of the second-floor windows are slightly set back and have ornamental scrolls against them.

The building also includes a contemporary shop front with pilasters that have elaborate carved capitals and a modillion cornice. This design is noted for its vigorous style, reminiscent of "Greek" Thompson. The building, along with All Saint's Church and Nos 21 to 26, forms a cohesive group with No 1 Cornhill.
