Description

26 High East Street is a building that dates from the early 16th century or possibly the late 15th century, with a remodel in the early 19th century. The rear portion of the building is likely from the late 16th century or early 17th century. It is finished in stucco, probably over a timber frame, and features a hipped slate roof. The building has three storeys and includes a moulded wooden eaves cornice.

On the second floor, there is one cased sash window with glazing bars. The first floor features a canted oriel window with a moulded cornice and sashes with glazing bars. The ground floor has an altered 19th-century shopfront that includes a glazed door with glazing bars and a fanlight with glazing bars.

Inside, the ground floor has a ceiling supported by a grid of deeply moulded joists, with four orders of moulding on those at the front and one convex and one concave moulding on those at the back. The front part of the ceiling can be compared to the oriel ceiling in Abbot's Hall, Milton Abbas (1498), or contemporary church ceilings in Dorset, such as those in Holwell, Puddletown, and Hazelbury Bryan. Although these examples are more elaborate, they may help to date 26 High East Street. Closer examples include the ceilings of the north and south chapels in St Peter's Church on High West Street. The building is part of a group with All Saints Church and Nos 21 to 26 High East Street, as well as No 1 Cornhill.
