Description
This terrace comprises numbers 67 to 77 (odd numbers) with area railings, located on Dorchester Road in Weymouth. It was built around 1830.
The terrace is a formal composition of six houses, with the central four units emphasized by a long, low pediment and the ends slightly set back. The houses are rendered with slate roofs. They are arranged over three storeys, with an attic and a basement, each house originally featuring two windows. Dormers are present, some possibly original to numbers 67 and 77, while others are 20th-century replacements.
The windows are predominantly glazing-bar sashes in plain reveals and on stone sills. The upper floors have 12-pane sashes, while the ground floor windows have 9 panes with radial heads. The basement windows are varied. Numbers 73 and 75 have plain sashes, while numbers 71 and 73 feature a flat bay window with a plain sash to the ground floor. The original six-panel doors, with raised and moulded panels, survive at numbers 69 to 73. Numbers 67 and 77 have more modern glazed doors. Number 75 has a simpler, likely 19th-century, door. Basement area railings with gates survive at numbers 69, 71, 75, and 77, with only remnants at number 78. The doors to numbers 69 and 71 are accessed by a broad flight of five stone steps with nosings.
External architectural details include a plat band above the ground floor, a moulded cornice, a small blocking course, and a coped parapet. Three ridge stacks are present. The return to Westbourne Road features a 12-pane sash on the first floor and a broad four-pane basement light. The rear of the terrace exhibits various 4-pane sashes and later 20th-century brick extensions. The interior has not been inspected. The group value of this terrace lies in its cohesive design and historical significance.
