Description
Rat's Castle is a detached house located at the end of a short lane opposite Hopman's Farm. It likely dates from the 17th century and was enlarged in the 19th century and around 1980. The original section has an L-shaped plan, with walls made of ironstone and brick, part of which is plastered. The house features a thatched roof with coped gables and a plastered brick chimney stack. The 19th-century extension on the north side has colourwashed brick walls and a slate roof, while the 20th-century extension on the south has plastered walls and a thatched roof. The building is one storey high with attics.
The entrance front includes a lean-to porch situated between two projecting wings; this porch has a stone slate roof and a ledged door. Above the porch, there is a half-dormer that contains a 20th-century casement window. The projecting wing of the original house, located to the right of the porch, features an added conservatory and a small casement window in the attic. Inside, there are two 17th-century moulded oak door frames that have survived, along with chamfered ceiling beams in the main ground floor room.
