South Eggardon Farmhouse

South Eggardon Farmhouse is a detached farmhouse with a core dating back to the 16th century, and subsequent alterations and additions from the early 17th century, the 19th century, and 20th century. It is constructed of coursed, dressed stone walls with slate roofs, stone gable copings, and moulded kneelers. Brick stacks are visible at the left-hand gable, left of centre on the ridge, and the right-hand gable.

The main house has two storeys and originally had four windows, with a further window to a dairy extension on the left-hand side. Ground floor windows are four-light stone mullion windows with ovolo moulds, while those above are three-light windows of the same design, now incorporating 20th-century metal casements with lead lights. A continuous string course runs above the ground floor windows. A 17th-century stone porch, located just left of centre, has a gabled front and a slate roof, with a door on the right-hand side featuring ovolo-moulded arrises and a square head, a raised label, and a 20th-century door with recessed panels. The porch also has 3- and 2-light mullions with labels.

The left-hand dairy section is lower in height and has a hipped slate roof. The right-hand gable-end has a projecting stack with two set-offs on the east side, and a small single-light window at first-floor level. A north-east range, set at right angles, has a rubble stone base with chalk block above and stone quoins, beneath a slate roof with stone gable copings; it includes two brick stacks, one at the centre of the ridge and one at the end gable (dating from the 18th century). This range has two storeys and four windows, with renewed 2-light wooden casements with glazing bars. There is a plank door on the north wall at the centre, dating from the 19th century.

The shorter, 17th-century south-east range has the same materials and copings. It features two 20th-century brick stacks and two storeys with two windows, each with a three-light stone mullion window (ovolo) with separate labels. A 20th-century door with six panels is located at the west end of the range, at the junction with the original core.

The interior layout, moving from north to south, includes a former lower end room, a cross-passage along the porch axis, a hall, and a parlour. The hall features a large open fireplace with moulded stone jambs and a square head opening into the cross-passage, as well as a compartmented ceiling with unusual ceiling-beam mouldings from the 16th century. The parlour has a similar open fireplace to a gable embrasure and compartmented ceiling beams of simpler profile, also from the 16th century. A plank-and-muntins screen, dating from the 16th century, incorporates a reset wooden depressed-arch doorhead. A fine 17th-century door with two recessed panels and moulded surrounds leads from the hall into the cross-passage, complete with a latch. Remains of compartmented ceiling beams are also present upstairs. The north-east range contains a bakehouse and service extension from the 17th century and appears to have originally served as a dairy. A large open fireplace remains in a rear room. A rear passage connecting the two back ranges was added in 1937.
