Description
The former village school, now used as a youth centre, was likely built around 1840 and may have been designed by architect Benjamin Ferrey. It features brick walls and a tiled roof that includes some fish scale tiling and a crested ridge. There are two brick stacks, one near the center and one at the rear, both with circular shafts adorned with raised lattice ornament. The building has an irregular L-shaped plan, with parts that are single storey and others that include an attic.
The entrance front, facing west, has a 20th-century single storey brick extension at the left end. In the original section, there is a raised gable at the left end, which displays a stone carving of a bishop's mitre. The entrance features a part-glazed door with a fanlight and side-light, all set within a stone surround and topped by a hoodmould. In the attic, there is a 2-light stone mullioned window with lead lights. To the right of the gable, the original classroom contains two 2-light stone mullioned windows with arched lights, also under hoodmoulds. On the end gable facing the road, there is a similar 4-light window, with the hoodmould displaying Coats of Arms on its stops, and a carved panel of roses above the window. The building remains largely unaltered.
