Description

This is a former service range, built in 1842 and designed by Benjamin Ferrey, originally part of Clyffe House. It has since been converted into eight residential units, circa 1980. The building is constructed of brick with stone dressings, and has slate roofs with coped gables. Brick stacks are present, some with octagonal shafts on the south range, and simpler stacks on the north and east ranges.

The building comprises three ranges arranged around a courtyard, attached to Clyffe House on the east. Part of the building is two storeys high, and part is one storey with an attic. The main south range features a slightly projecting gabled wing at its left end, which is buttressed. This wing has a four-light stone mullioned window on the ground floor and a similar three-light window in the attic, with a small, lancet shaped recess above the attic window. To the right of this wing is a 20th-century door set within an original opening, complete with a fanlight. The ground floor of the south range contains one four-light and one three-light mullioned and transomed window, plus one two-light mullioned window under a hoodmould. A single-light window is located under the eaves. The attic has three gabled dormers, containing mullioned windows – one three-light and two two-light.

The design within the courtyard is less formal. The entrances to the residential units have brick, four-centred arched doorways with 20th-century doors. The majority of the windows are sash windows with glazing bars, though some are casements. An entrance to the courtyard is located on the north side, underneath a single-storey block that links the north and east ranges.
