Description

Clyffe Manor House, also known as Clyffe House East, is a country house that was built in 1842 by architect Benjamin Ferrey. The building has been converted into one house and three flats. It features brick walls with some decorative diaper patterning in burnt headers, and stone dressings. The roof is made of stone slate and includes parapets and coped gables. Symmetrical brick stacks have star-shaped shafts with oversailing caps. The house is designed in an H-plan and has two storeys plus an attic.

The main north front showcases a central two-storeyed porch flanked by projecting gabled wings. The porch contains a moulded four-centred arched door opening. Above, on the first floor, there is a canted oriel with a solid hipped crested cap, a moulded cill, and stone mullioned and transomed windows with arched lights. The left wing features a 20th-century round arched doorway. Both the ground and first floors have a four-light stone mullioned and transomed window with ornamental cast iron glazing, with the first-floor window also having a hoodmould. The attic includes a two-light stone mullioned window with a hoodmould. The right wing is similar but lacks a ground floor window. In the semi-octagonal blocks, there are two-light mullioned and transomed windows with ornamental cast iron glazing on both floors. Similar windows are found in the sections between these blocks and the porch, although the first-floor windows have lost their glazing. The attic features two gabled dormers with mullioned windows.

Inside Clyffe Manor House, the main entrance hall has contemporary oak panelling, a panelled ceiling with moulded ribs, four-centred arched panelled doors, a four-centred arched fireplace surround, and transverse arches. The closed string staircase has twisted and turned balusters and a moulded handrail. Other rooms contain contemporary ceilings and fireplaces, and there is some re-used 17th-century carved panelling in a recess off the stair hall. In Clyffe House East, the main ground floor rooms also have contemporary panelling and ceilings. The building was under conversion at the time of the survey in April 1986.
