Description
The Old School is a former school that has been converted into a private house. It was built around 1850 for the 7th Earl of Shaftesbury. The building features brick walls and a tiled roof adorned with bands of fish-scale tiling and moulded bargeboards. There is one brick chimney stack located to the left of the center. The structure is single storey and has gabled porches at each end, each with a 20th-century panelled door. There are three casement windows with glazing bars set under depressed four-centred arches. At the right end, there is an extension with brick walls and a similar tiled roof, which has lancet windows; this extension was apparently used for worship before the Parish Church was built. The rear wing, which housed former classrooms, is of similar construction. The Old School holds local historic significance as one of Lord Shaftesbury's village schools, similar to the one at Hinton Martell.
