Description
Forde Bridge is a road bridge that spans the River Axe and dates from around the 17th century. It may have been built in 1824 for Sir Alexander Hood. The bridge is constructed from dressed lias stone, featuring Ham stone copings that create level, chamfered parapets. It has three roughly semi-circular arches supported by two piers in the water, which include cut-waters, along with abutments on the banks. The bridge has outward splay at each end, with an extension on the southwest corner leading towards Forde Abbey in Dorset. The east side has full-height angled cutwaters, while the west side has angled cutwaters only below the arch springing. The bridge is of single track width.
