Description

This is a mid-17th century house, subsequently altered in the 18th and later centuries. It is constructed of brick, with colourwashed walls and a tiled roof with slate eaves courses. The building has brick stacks and retains a moulded timber cornice at eaves level. The original form comprised a single-room-deep main block with an early rear wing projecting to the south. A single-storey lean-to was likely added to the rear of the main wing in the 19th century, and a more recent single-storey projecting wing exists to the north.

The house is two storeys with attics. A platband runs along the first floor. The main entrance is through a pair of part-glazed doors set within a late 18th century classical portico, featuring slender timber columns, an entablature, and a pedimented roof. The front elevation has four double-hung sash windows with glazing bars and keystones to the arches on the ground floor, and five similar windows above. Three dormers with hipped roofs and double-hung sash windows with glazing bars are situated in the attic.

The south elevation, facing Parkwood Road, has two double-hung sash windows with glazing bars and one blocked window on each floor. The rear elevation includes some double-hung sash windows, and some probably earlier mullioned windows with lead lights; one mullioned window remains on the ground floor, now partially obscured by the lean-to. The projecting north wing features windows with Gothic-style glazing on the ground floor. This room is believed to have been used as a chapel, and the wing has a timber bell-cote on the roof.

Internally, a chapel room and one first-floor room contain good 18th century carved fireplace surrounds with cast iron interiors. The kitchen has deeply chamfered spine beams with run-out stops. A late 18th- to early 19th-century staircase features plain square balusters and a moulded mahogany handrail. An outbuilding, now belonging to No 2 Lewens Lane, is attached to the rear of the property. The houses may have once been in the same ownership.

The property is enclosed by a low boundary wall with ornamental iron railings and gates. To the north, a higher brick wall with brick gate piers and timber gates exists. A further higher brick wall runs along Parkwood Road to the south.
