Description

Hatchlands is a detached farmhouse with a rear range dating from the 17th century, a front range from the mid-18th century, and a right-hand end added in the mid-19th century. The building features brick and stone walls that are rendered, topped with a slate roof and stone gable-copings. There are several stacks: a stone and brick stack at the left gable, a brick stack to the right of center, and another brick stack at the right gable.

The farmhouse has a large, projecting two-storey porch located to the right of center, which has a stone gable-coping at the front. It is two storeys high with attics and consists of six bays, featuring sash windows with crown glass, recessed wooden frames, and wooden cills. The porch includes a round-headed sash window above the front door and an oculus with glazing-bars in the gable. The early 19th-century doorway is adorned with Soanian incised pilasters and capitals, moulded reveals, and a rectangular fanlight with elliptical-shaped glazing-bars, topped by an open wooden pediment. The door itself has flush and recessed panels, also from the early 19th century. An attached mounting-block is present at the left gable end.

The long rear range, constructed with the same materials, has no stacks and is two storeys tall, featuring approximately four windows that include a mixture of casements, sashes, and three-light stone mullions with lead lights. A datestone on the rear wall reads "I B M 1757" on a fielded panel with a rope-moulded surround, possibly indicating the construction date of the front range. An iron weathervane on the porch gable displays "R S 1723" in openwork.

Inside, the rear range has roughly hewn exposed ceiling-beams, a stone-jambed fireplace with a wooden lintel featuring filleted stops, and a bread oven. The front range includes ribbed window shutters, wooden elliptical arches with capitals in the hall, and a fielded-panel dado.
