Description

A block of five cottages, probably dating from the 18th century. The cottages are constructed of rubble stone with stone slate roofs and stone stacks along the ridge. Number 1, which has a projecting rear wing on the left, features a ledged door and casement windows with glazing bars to both the ground and first floors. A stone lean-to extension extends from the left end. Number 2, which is at the left end of the main range, has a ledged door in a temporary porch, three casement windows with glazing bars to the ground floor, and two similar windows to the first floor, alongside a further lean-to extension. Number 3 is partly within a projecting wing, has a ledged door, and boasts casement windows with glazing bars in both the main range and the wing. Number 4 features a ledged door in a timber gabled porch, two casement windows with glazing bars to the ground floor (one partially hidden by a wing), and a similar window on the first floor which is slightly dormered. Number 5 has a ledged door, a casement window with glazing bars and a small fixed window to the ground floor, and a horizontally sliding sash window on the first floor, also slightly dormered. A lean-to extension, constructed in matching materials, is located at the right end. Internally, the main ground floor room retains an open fireplace with a stone lintol and one chamfered ceiling beam. A dry stone wall forms the front boundary. At the time of survey in 1984, the whole block was undergoing repair, and permission had recently been granted to rebuild the extension as a two-storeyed block.
