Stables And Attached Cottages At Encombe, 100 Metres West South West Of Encombe House

The stables and attached cottages at Encombe, located 100 meters west-southwest of Encombe House, date from the late 18th century to early 19th century. They feature ashlar stone walls and a hipped slate roof with a modillion cornice. The building has ashlar stacks on the ridge and rising from the eaves at the front of the cottage wings. It is designed in a U-shaped plan, with the stables in the center and cottages in projecting wings at each end. The structure is one storey with attics.

In the center of the stable range, there is an open section with a shallow pediment and a moulded cornice supported by four Tuscan columns. The openings between the columns are partly infilled with panelled doors. A Diocletian window is set in the pediment, featuring a sash with glazing bars. Above the pediment is an octagonal clock and bell turret made of timber, topped with a copper domed roof and weathervane. The lower section of the turret has shallow segmental pediments on alternate faces, while the bell section includes round-headed openings on alternate faces.

On each side of the central feature, there are ranges with ledged doors and sashes with glazing bars on the ground floor. In the attic, each range has a central raised pedimented dormer with a moulded cornice and a round-headed loft door. The projecting cottage wings at each end feature a flush panel door on the inner facing wall, two sashes with center glazing bars on the ground floor, and two raised pedimented dormers with sashes that have vertical glazing bars in the attic.
