Description

Holwell House is a detached house dating to the 15th century, with significant alterations and additions made in the 17th, 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries. The original section is constructed of irregularly bonded brickwork with a chamfered plinth and ashlar quoins. Later work incorporates Flemish-bond brickwork, some of which has been rendered. The roof is tiled, with a half-hipped section to the rear, and includes brick stacks. The south front has two storeys and a three-window arrangement. It features 20th-century two-light casement windows with glazing bars and a central 20th-century glazed door. A former cross-passage is accessed through a 20th-century door in the re-entrant angle between the front and rear ranges.

Inside, there are several early doorways with heavy timber frames, alongside 18th- or early 19th-century panelled doors with original hinges. The house has deep stop-chamfered ceiling beams. A wing from the 18th century contains a cast iron fireplace, likely dating to the early 19th century. The south room of the original range retains an original arch braced collar beam truss roof with curved windbracing to the purlins, and shows traces of smoke-blackening. The roof at the north end of the original range has later collar trusses incorporating earlier timbers. The central section of the roof is not visible. Recent 20th-century additions are designed to be in harmony with the existing fabric of the house.
