Description

Hawthorne Cottage is a house dating from the late 16th century or early 17th century, with alterations made in the 18th and 19th centuries. It is constructed of red brick laid in Flemish garden wall bond, featuring off-centre and gable chimneys in brick. The building was originally timber-framed, with brick encasing except for the west bay where the timber framing is still visible. It has a plain tiled roof and a three-bay plan with a former central lobby entry.

The south elevation is single storey with an attic, featuring an off-centre doorway that has replaced an earlier door position to the west. The plain plank door is set beneath a segmental arch. To the west of the doorway, there is a segmentally-headed sash window with three over three panes, and above it, a similar window in the attic with a gablet above. The west end bay showcases exposed timber framing with six panels and an angle brace at the corner, along with a plain doorway. There is also a 19th-century casement window with two lights, each containing eight panes. The eaves are adorned with a dentilled band. The east gable, which previously featured a 19th-century shop window, now has 20th-century windows in the attic openings.

The interior has not been inspected but is known to contain significant features, including substantial remains of wall framing and roof carpentry, framed cross walls with original infill, and a single-purlin roof with collars and a diagonally-set ridge.
