Description
Clifton Hall is a small country house built in the early 18th century, possibly designed by Francis Smith of Warwick for Sir Charles Pye. The house is constructed of red brick with some ashlar dressings and features rusticated ashlar quoins of unequal length. It has a hipped slate roof and brick panelled stacks. The hall is the southernmost of two monumental wings that flank a courtyard, with the other wing being the former coach house block. There may have been plans to connect the two buildings with a principal range to the east, but this was never realized.
The north elevation is two storeys high, featuring a moulded plinth and eaves cornice, with reduced proportions on the first floor. It has seven bays with casements and glazing bar sashes, which include gauged brick heads, raised keystones, stone sills, and aprons. The ground floor windows have wooden cross frames and retain some glass with lead curves. The central doorway has a moulded and cased architrave topped with a swan neck pediment on console brackets, which contains the Pye coat of arms.
The west elevation also stands two storeys tall, with similar architectural features as the north elevation, including a moulded plinth and eaves cornice, reduced proportions on the first floor, and five bays with casements and glazing bar sashes. The central door has a heavy moulded architrave with panelled pilasters, although the head of the door was obscured during the resurvey in November 1985.
Inside, there is an early 18th-century dog leg staircase with turned balusters. At the time of the resurvey, Clifton Hall was noted to be in a derelict and dangerous condition.
