Description

The Wimborne Minster War Memorial is a stone structure erected in 1921, likely designed by C E Ponting. It is situated on three octagonal steps and features a moulded square plinth with broach stops. The west side of the plinth has an inscription carved within a laurel leaf wreath, which reads: "TO THE FALLEN / IN THE GREAT WAR / 1914-1918 / WHOSE NAMES / ARE INSCRIBED / WITHIN THE / MINSTER." Above the plinth, a tapering chamfered octagonal column with broach stops rises. Each of the four sides of the Decorated-style head showcases carved figures within ogee crocketed niches, depicting St George and the Dragon on the south side, the Crucifixion on the west, the Virgin and Child on the east, and Saint Cuthburga on the north. The head is crowned with spiky crocketed pinnacles.

This memorial was established following a fundraising appeal launched in 1919 to honor those who lost their lives during the Great War. Its design closely resembles other memorials in North Dorset, specifically those at Gillingham and Marnhull, which are also attributed to C E Ponting, the Diocesan Architect of Salisbury. The memorial is designated at Grade II due to its commemoration of First World War casualties, its elaborate architectural quality, and its group value with the nearby Grade I listed church, enhancing the urban character of the town center.
