Description

15 Cornmarket is a building dated 1758, featuring brick walls and a tiled roof. It stands two storeys high with its gable end facing Cornmarket. The ground floor was originally open, supported by round brick arches on brick piles with stone caps, but these arches are now infilled. The Cornmarket elevation has been modified to include a pair of modern doors where the arches once were. There is a plat band at the first-floor level, and a Venetian window above, with the center light glazed and the side lights blocked, framed by a moulded architrave and entablature. Projecting brick pilasters with moulded caps are located at each end of the facade, and there is a plat band at the ceiling level. The gable features an inscription that reads, "This edifice was erected with the affiliance of the neighbouring gentlemen, by the Friendly Society of this town, for their life. 1758."

On the east side elevation, there are four arches on the ground floor; three have been filled with double-hung sash windows with glazing bars, while one has been replaced with a later door. The first floor contains four double-hung sash windows with glazing bars, and there is a moulded brick modillion cornice at the eaves. Inside, the 18th-century staircase remains, although the balusters have been covered. The main upper hall retains its cornice but has been divided by modern partitions.
