Description

The Minster Church of St Cuthburga is a significant collegiate church with origins dating back to Saxon times, although the main structure is primarily from the 12th century and late medieval period, with considerable restoration in the 19th century. The church features walls made of a mix of limestone and local ironstone, with most roofs covered in lead and parapets, while the north porch has a tiled roof with stone eaves courses.

The church has a cruciform layout, consisting of a nave, aisles, a west tower, north and south porches, a crossing with a central tower, transepts, and a chancel that includes north and south aisles, as well as a vestry located to the east of the south transept, which has a low modern extension. Beneath the eastern part of the chancel lies a crypt, originally the Lady Chapel. The main sections of the nave, crossing, central tower, and the west bay of the chancel date back to the 12th century, while the chancel and transepts were rebuilt in the 13th century. The nave was extended to the west in the 14th century, and the west tower was added in the 15th century, with the chancel aisles also rebuilt in the 14th century and restored in the 19th century. The churchyard is enclosed by a low brick boundary wall with iron gates.
