Description
The bridge in Touts Quarry, dated 1854, is a footbridge that spans a track or quarry rail bed. It is constructed from dry-laid thin-bedded Portland stone with ashlar dressings. The bridge is set between natural rock revetments where the track has been cut through, featuring an arch approximately 2.5 meters wide and 3.5 meters high at the crown, leading to a tunnel vault about 4 meters long. The structure includes well-dressed quoins and voussoirs, with a distinctive cranked single stone voussoir at the haunches. Above the crown, there is a plain stone inscribed with 'J.C.LANO 1854'. The bridge rises to about 5.5 meters and lacks parapets, with an overgrown earth walkway. On the northwest side, which is covered in ivy, there is a blocked adit on the north side, approximately 3 meters deep. A flight of 27 concrete steps descends by the south abutment. The name Lano appears among the inscriptions in the churchyard of St. George Reforne, indicating a well-built structure with some design pretension in this abandoned quarry area.
