Description
Cauldron Barn Farmhouse and the barn immediately north are believed to date from the late 16th century or early 17th century. The farmhouse features walls and a roof made of Purbeck Stone, with rebuilt stone stacks. The original structure includes a one-room house with ground, first, and attic floors, along with an attached outbuilding that was recently used as stables, forming a longhouse or laithe-house. The loft above the stable has been converted into a flat. A two-storey kitchen wing was added to the rear of the original house, dating from the late 17th century to early 18th century, also constructed with Purbeck Stone walls and roof. There is a two-storey 19th-century addition to the west, featuring rendered walls and a slate roof, and a modern addition to the east with Purbeck Stone walls and roof. A glazed conservatory is located on the south side, along with other later lean-to additions that have rendered walls and slate roofs. All external doors and windows are modern. Inside, the main ground floor room has an open fireplace with an oak lintel and a bread oven, along with exposed ceiling beams. The ground floor rooms feature stone flagged floors and early ledged doors. The stone barn to the north of the house dates from the 19th century, with Purbeck Stone walls and a slate roof, complete with coped gables. Other farm buildings on the property are either recent or have been significantly altered and are not eligible for listing.
